Leader in Me 101 for Parents
We will be offering a Leader in Me 101 informational overview for parents once during each trimester this school year. This is an opportunity to learn more about the 7 Habits, the language that is used with your child throughout their school day, and how the Leader in Me has transformed Westgate. Here is the list of Leader in Me Resources provided at the session held on October 27.
What is a Leader in Me School?
Visit www.theleaderinme.org for information about this philosophy, which stems from The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Steven Covey. Students at a Leader in Me School learn and live the 7 Habits:
- Habit One: Be Proactive
- Habit Two: Begin with the End in Mind
- Habit Three: Put First Things First
- Habit Four: Think Win-Win
- Habit Five: Seek First to Understand, then to Be Understood
- Habit Six: Synergize
- Habit Seven: Sharpen the Saw
How did Westgate become a Leader in Me School?
Westgate began this journey in 2013, when teachers on our Core Values Committee sought a better way to instill good character. Staff read Sean Covey's book entitled The Leader in Me. By June of 2014, a three-day training took place, with 52 Westgate staff members plus 2 Westgate parents spending the weekend learning the value of living the seven habits, not only teaching the practices to students.
Annual Leadership Day
Once a year the students and staff invite the Arlington Heights community in to show what being a leader at Westgate looks like. Below is the coverage of that day the Westgate community perfectly calls Leadership Day.
