Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

    Curriculum Nights-

We enjoyed welcoming many of our seventh and eighth grade parents last Wednesday to their Curriculum Night. We know the “walk” in your child’s shoes becomes more rigorous with our three flights of stairs when they become seventh and eighth graders!

Each year, we reflect on our 6-7-8 Grade Curriculum Night formats and make changes based on parent and staff feedback. Here is a link to a survey, and we thank you in advance for your time.

    AIMS web and MAP Assessments-

This District 25 Assessment Calendar was previously shared by our Department of Student Learning along with this letter overview. All 6-7-8 students have or will participate in short AIMSweb R-CBM and Math Concepts and Applications assessments during ELA and math classes this month.

During the month of September, the NWEA Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test will only be administered to new students or those being progress monitored; which largely consists of students in reading intervention, math intervention, or special education.

All students in grades 6-7 will next take the reading and math MAP assessment in December.

    October Parent-Teacher Conferences-

District 25 Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 18th and Friday, October 19th. This is a different timeframe than in past years, which will allow parents the opportunity to meet with their child’s teachers earlier in the school year.

At South, we will be following the conference model of past years, where parents can sign up for morning, day, and evening times with as many or as few of their child’s teachers as they choose on Thursday, October 18th. Teams will schedule recommended Friday morning conferences.

More information regarding our conference format and online scheduling will be sent home in the upcoming week(s).

With PowerSchool, Schoology, and ongoing school-home communication, our students and parents are able to proactively track academic progress each week of school. We understand why some families choose not to schedule conferences for this reason.

    Lunch at South-

One of the settings we focus on to begin the school year is the lunchroom. Administrators and supervisors have reviewed lunch routines and expectations. With approximately 300 students eating together, it requires the cooperation of all to make it a safe and fun environment. Students do choose their own lunch tables and seats. Each quarter, we ask students to commit to a table after a transition period, so that we can quickly find/account for students as needed during lunch. If students have concerns with their table choices after they have committed to a seat, they can always talk with a lunch supervisor, teacher, or administrator and we will support them in making a short or long term move. We have a cabinet full of board and other games students can choose to take out and play at their lunch tables along with outside chess/checker tables. Mostly, though, they just enjoy sitting, eating, and talking with one another. There are special Cardinal Cash cafe/outdoor seating privileges and many students receive passes to visit different teachers/classroom spaces during the lunch periods. Lunch is always a busy, fun, social time in the school day.

    Safety Drills-

To begin each school year, teachers review important safety information with students. This month we practiced announced evacuation, hard lockdown, and shelter-in-place drills as a school. During the weeks of September-October, we will conduct some unannounced drills as a school and with the Arlington Heights Fire and Police Departments. We want students and staff to understand and be familiar with procedures in the event of each type of situation.

    Other South Happenings-

Our Cross Country and Girl’s Basketball teams’ seasons are fully underway, and they have been participating in their first games and meets.

We had a wonderful turnout for Golf this year, which started even before the first day of school. Congratulations to the following students:  Luke Kruger, Natalie Von Oesen, and Kate Reising. They qualified to compete in the IESA State Golf Tournament next week!

As a reminder, there is no Activity Bus this Monday, September 10th and no students should be staying after school past 2:45 PM.

Students and parents can check out our announcements page to know other South happenings and student opportunities. You can also click on our @South Twitter and @ahsd25 Twitter pages for highlights and updates around South and Arlington Heights School District 25.

We have been enjoying your children. Thank you for entrusting us with them each and every day!

    Sincerely,

    Piper Boston, Principal

    Steve Perkins, Associate Principal

    Sheri Rosen, Associate Principal

    Curriculum Nights-

We enjoyed meeting so many of our sixth grade parents last Wednesday. Our Seventh/Eighth Grade Curriculum Night is scheduled for this Wednesday, September 5th at 6:30 PM. Parents will experience a “walk” in their child’s shoes. Here are some important notes for those attending:

    • All parents should come knowing their child’s Homebase section (7W-1), Teacher’s Name, and Classroom Number.
    • Please plan to be at your child’s Homebase classroom by 6:30 PM. **We suggest arriving early for a parking spot as this night is always well attended. Our doors will open at 6:15 PM.
    • Here is a link to the general schedule of the evening. However, your children are working on personalized schedules for you this week that will be provided during your “first period” Homebase on Wednesday night!

    South Technology-

At our 6/7/8 Curriculum Nights, parents received or will be receiving hard copies of the following:

    • Letter overview (link) of our different technology and home-school communication tools.
    • Schoology parent login information (Parents can use your same parent account as last year. We are sending out new personalized information due to the high number of parents who do not have accounts.)
    • PowerSchool parent login/account information (We are providing information for new parents only. Parents can use their accounts from last school year.)

Sixth grade parents received this Chromebook Take-Home form on Curriculum Night. On Friday, all seventh and eighth grade students received hard copies of this packet to bring home to their parents.

Families have the option of students bringing their Chromebooks to/from school or keeping them here in school full time. If students want to take their Chromebooks to/from school, they need to submit a signed Take-Home form by this Friday, September 7th. Please review everything with your children carefully so you both understand the added responsibility of being issued a Chromebook.

Chromebooks can begin going home on Monday, September 10th with students who return their signed forms.

    Special Services Think Tank-

Interested in helping connect families with students with special needs – with each other & with their school community?  Join a group of parents and educators to brainstorm ways we can foster more relationships through district programs, staff development, education of all families, and community partnerships.

Our next meeting is Wednesday, September 5th from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm at the Administration Center.  Our topic for this month is “speakers/programs we can offer” so come ready to share ideas.  Future meetings include October 5 (10:30 am), November 5 (6:30 pm), and December 5 (10:30 am).

Feel free to contact Dr. Lori Bein with questions at lbein@sd25.org.

Message Regarding Bringing Your Dog to School-

Many of us love pets of all kinds! Ms. Boston and Ms. Rosen have cherished pet dogs. Mr. Perkins and Dr. Bein have had dogs, cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, chameleons, and more. Bringing pets onto school property, however, can cause some concerns.  We do have students who are allergic to some pets.  We, also, have students who are very afraid of dogs.  If you do need to bring a pet with you to pick up your students or to view an outside sporting event, please keep your pet leashed and please clean up after it.  Also, please know that some children are very anxious seeing a dog on school grounds.  Thank you for helping our students feel safe at school.

    South Extracurricular Clubs-

We will soon advertise a list of all South clubs and sponsors for the 2018-2019 school year. Students can also complete a form in the office to propose a club and seek help finding a staff sponsor. If clubs are beginning sooner than our advertised list, students and parents will know through our daily announcements page.

    Other South Happenings-

Students and parents can check out our announcements page to know different South happenings and student opportunities. You can also click on our @South Twitter and @ahsd25 Twitter pages for highlights and updates around South and Arlington Heights School District 25.

We look forward to seeing many of our seventh and eighth grade parents this coming week. Wishing all a great week ahead!

    Sincerely,

    Piper Boston, Principal
