Pennies for a Purpose: Westgate Helps Houston

The Westgate Student Lighthouse Team didn’t hesitate to take action when they heard about Hurricane Harvey. They decided to collect pennies ‘for a purpose’, asking students, families and staff to donate loose change, for donation to the Houston Food Pantry. During the week, Westgate was also paired with Mayde Creek School in Houston to provide support to the families in their community. The Student Lighthouse Team created posters, made daily announcements to the school, and the message went to parents in the Wolverine Weekly. In a tremendous show of support, one Westgate family offered to match the donations collected at school. After only five days, the fundraiser concluded and the coins were counted, yielding a total of $2533.33!  Wow!  The matching donation was received, and a total of $5066.66 was provided to the Houston Food Pantry and the Amazon Wish List of Mayde Creek School. An extra recess was promised to the Westgate homeroom with the most coins, however due to the overwhelming generosity demonstrated by all, Dr. Carter awarded all homerooms with an extra recess.
