    Construction Update

     
    This week the construction crews continue working on the 1st floor exterior masonry walls and roughing in mechanical, electrical and plumbing. They began the temporary boarding up of the 1st floor and worked to install roof blocking and roof drains.
     
    Next week, weather permitting, they will pour the 2nd floor slab and begin installing the 2nd floor exterior walls and roof system. They will also run the piping for the roof drains.

     

    Erin's Law

    Erin’s Law is an Illinois Public Act that requires us to provide child sexual abuse prevention education for children in pre­-kindergarten through 8th grades. All Erin’s Law information can be found on the District’s website. The site also has an opt-out form.

    Jump Rope For Heart

    Did you know that our entire school is about to officially kick-off our Jump Rope/Hoops For Heart with the American Heart Association this year?  Yes, that’s right!  It’s time to have some fun and learn about heart health and save lives.

    In just one week, on 1/19, the American Heart Association will be coming to our campus for our school assembly to help kick off our Jump Rope/Hoops For Heart event. We will learn about the new Scare Squad crew, how the heart works, how exercise can be fun, and how raising money can save lives!

    Earn JAX by raising $150 on www.heart.org/jump  before the kick-off assembly on 1/19!

    Girls on the Run

    Registration opens on January 15th for 3rd-5th grade girls. Practices will begin in March and the coaches, Mrs.Cataldo and Mrs. Dawson will send out more information closer to our start date.     The Students Involved with Technology Conference
     
    If creating movies, coding, working with robots, website design, video production, or constructing your own computer is a passion for your child, The Students Involved with Technology Conference is a perfect opportunity for them to come learn with like-minded students. The S.I.T. Conference is a student-focused conference run by students for students. Students present to their 3rd through 12th grade peers on their passions, hear from a student keynote speaker, participate in hands-on design challenges, and experiment with STEM. This all-day event is being hosted at Westgate Elementary School on February 10th, 2018.  Snacks, lunch, and prizes are included with the $30.00 registration fee. Check out past conference highlights here.

    Construction12/22/17

     

    It has been a wonderful school year so far. Thank you for all of your support and sharing your children with us. They are such a joy!  Have a wonderful break with family and friends. We are looking forward to a wonderful 2018. We Are GB!

     

    Construction Update: It is starting to look like a building. Next week they will complete the bolting and welding of the steel framing. Over winter break, they will install the new univents in Mrs. Pelczynski 's and Mrs. Palm's rooms and add the masonry where their rooms will meet the new addition. They will also begin 1st-floor masonry walls and prep the 2nd story floor. Several projects are weather depended. We are hoping for warmer weather.

     Construction 12 -15

    Construction Update

    The steel arrived on Thursday and the framing started today. Steelworkers are planning to work on Saturday. First-floor masonry work will begin next week along with the completion of the steelwork. Over Winter Break, they will be installing the new univents in Mrs. Pelczynski's and Mrs. Palm's rooms as well as removing windows and installing brickwork in their place. They also hope to brick in where the windows were in the stairwell and Mrs. Power's room. Things should move fast now that the steel has arrived!

     

    Drop Off and Pick up Reminder

    Please remember when picking up or dropping off your child in the car line to pull all the way up to the first cone or to the car in front of you. Stopping early slows down the line.

     

    Calendar

    The District 25 School board approved the 2018-2019 School Calendar last night. We will be starting earlier in order to better align with the District 214 calendar. 2018-2019 School Calendar

    Construction Update

    This week they removed the pine tree on Roanoke Dr. to make way for the connections to the sewer and sanitary lines for the new addition. They will be putting those in on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Today we saw the delivery of concrete blocks and other equipment. Wednesday the steel will arrive and Thursday and Friday will be busy with the framing of the building. We are looking forward watching the progress next week.

    Construction Update

    We are still waiting for the arrival of the steel. They say it should arrive next week. My fingers are crossed. Over the last week, they dug a hole for the extra support of the upstairs hallway addition. This week they filled it with concrete. 
     
    Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders
    Please do not park in the staff parking lot off of Roanoke. If you park on the street and walk up to drop off your child, please use the sidewalks as cutting through the parking lot can be dangerous at drop off and pick up times.
     
     
    Maker Space Donations
     
    The MakerSpace donation box is now open!  If you have any materials you are no longer using at home or are going to recycle, please consider bringing them to our MakerSpace in the LMC.  
     
    Here are some examples of things we are in need of...
    • empty toilet paper, paper towel, or wrapping paper tubes
    • cardboard
    • egg cartons
    • thread spools
    • clear round plastic lids & containers-- washed
    • cylindrical containers-- oatmeal, Pringles, etc.
    • bubble wrap
    • packing foam
    • USED Legos, K'nex, Tinker Toys, or other building toys
    • Plastic tripods that come with pizza delivery-- washed

    Just a reminder that there is no school next week. School will resume on Monday, 11/27.  I hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Enjoy the time with family and friends.  I continue to be thankful for the wonderful children you send us each day. They are a joy! I truly appreciate working with such a wonderful community that is so supportive of students and staff.

    Construction Update

    The construction site was quiet this week as we are waiting for the arrival of the steel framing. It should arrive the week of November 27th so students will be here to see the installation. Over Thanksgiving break, they will be doing some digging in Mrs. Silva's old room and putting in extra supports for the second-floor hallway that they will be adding. We are still on schedule for completion in early August.

     

    Book Fair 

    The Book Fair will be open today until 4:00 p.m., Monday, November 20th from 8:30 am - 7:30 pm and Tuesday, November 21st from 8:30 am - 10:00 am. If you are unable to attend the Book Fair in person, we invite you to visit our online Book Fair at   bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/greenbrierelemschool. Our online fair is available now through Friday, November 24th.

     

    Progress Reports

    Progress reports were sent home yesterday with EC students and today with our K-5 students. Please check your child's backpack for this important information.

     

    Conferences

    Parent Teacher Conferences are November 20th and 21st.  Classroom Teachers look forward to this time with you to discuss your child’s progress and answer your questions.  If your child receives support from other staff members, they will try to attend the conference if they're available at that time. Please email them directly with questions or concerns in their area of expertise. Contact your student's teacher directly if you need to make any changes to your conference time.

     

    Supporting Maya

    As some of you may know, we have a first grader, Maya, who is fighting cancer. The family has set up a GoFundMe page. Please click HERE  to learn more.

    Construction Update

    This week's work involved a lot of demolition. A wall and soffits were removed so that the new framing can be attached to the building. Next week, the steel will be delivered and they will start on the framing. 

     

    Conferences

    Parent Teacher Conferences are November 20th and 21st.  Classroom Teachers look forward to this time with you to discuss your child’s progress and answer your questions.  If your child receives support from other staff members, they will try to attend the conference however they may not be available.     Cold Weather

    As our weather starts to get cold and snowy, please make sure to send your child with the appropriate outdoor clothing, as we will be taking the children outside for recess unless the temperature with wind chill is below zero. Students must have snow pants and boots to leave the blacktop once there is snow on the ground.

    Construction Update

    They are making progress on our addition. We can see the outline of our new space. Next week they will begin working on the electrical closet that will go in what was Mrs. Silva's office.

    Community Assistance
     
    We are often approached by different community groups offering support. Support includes a meal for Thanksgiving, winter coats for children and holiday presents. Many families struggle at different times in their lives. Please let us know if your family would benefit from some community support.     Construction 10/27/17

     

    Construction Update

    They are continuing to pour concrete for the foundation. Today, they were pouring the outer walls. Mrs. Silva's room will become the new hallway to the addition. They will start working in that area on November 6th. To give Mrs. Silva a room to meet with students, Ms. Kaffka and I are now sharing my office. We will continue to squeeze in as necessary and are excited to see the progress.

     

    Halloween Reminders

    If your child is going home for lunch on Halloween, please make sure they know if you are picking them up from the car line or in at the front of the building.  Students going home for lunch should return at 1:10 p.m. and enter through the front of the building. Additional Halloween information can be found in the previous post.

    Construction

    Construction Update 

    Things are moving fast. You can actually see the outline of the addition. They will continue to work on the foundation of the building for the next couple of weeks. They will then work on underground plumbing next before backfilling around the foundation. They are hoping to start the installation of the steel framing during the second half of November.

    Conferences 

    We will be using Sign Up Genius to have parents schedule conferences again this year. EC families should receive an email on Monday, October 23 and K-5 parents will receive an email on Tuesday, October 24th. Please contact the office if you do not receive an email by October 25th.
