We had another great week at Greenbrier! Our first fire drill practice was on Wednesday morning.  Students and staff did an excellent job exiting the building quickly and quietly. We will practice evacuating the building two more times this fall. We will also be practicing Shelter in Place and Hard Lock Down drills. Shelter in Place is what we would do in a weather emergency, and Hard Lock Down drills help students establish a quick response to any intruder in the building.

I hope to see many you of the Back to School Bash tonight. It will be a lot of fun.

It was another busy week at Greenbrier. Our K-5 students enjoyed a presentation by World Champion BMX rider Matt Wilhelm. He shared great messages about being kind, never giving up and pursuing your passions. Routines are being established and I am enjoying seeing our students learning! Thank you to all the parents that made it to our Parent Nights. I hope that you learned a lot about your child's class this year.

Tonight is the last night to support the PTA at their Berry-yo Fun - Raiser in downtown Arlington Heights. I hope to see you there! Please also consider joining the PTA. They provide our students with wonderful events and activities.

Drop off and Pick up Reminders

Please remember that you can only make a right turn out of the back parking lot. We made this change this year due to how dangerous the intersection of Verde and Roanoke had become. I have watched several very close calls over the last couple of years as students and cars negotiated the intersection. I would ask that when you turn right, please do not u-turn down the street and return to the Verde and Roanoke intersection. Instead please take Roanoke to Wilke or Lexington to make your way home.

    Bringing Your Dog to School?

Many of us love pets of all kinds! Dr. Bein has had dogs, cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, chameleons, and more. Bringing pets onto school property, however, can cause some concerns. We do have students who are allergic to some pets. We, also, have students who are very afraid of dogs. If you do need to bring a pet with you to pick up your students or to view an outside sporting event, please keep your pet leashed and please clean up after it. Also, please know that some children are very anxious seeing a dog on school grounds. Thank you for helping our students feel safe at school.

    August 9, 2018

    Dear K-5 Greenbrier Families,

The 2018-2019 school year is right around the corner. Welcome back to our returning families and welcome to our new families. We are excited to show everyone the new addition and all of the improvements that have been made over the summer! The staff has been working hard to prepare for the new school year. We have a new standards based progress report. District 25 will be holding parent meetings about the new progress report this fall. Our theme this year is Choose Kind. One thing that we will do to kick off our theme is have an assembly with BMX biker Matt Wilhelm on August 28th.

Class placement will be emailed again this year. Please look for the email on Wednesday, August 15th. If your student's 18-19 registration is not complete (e.g. proof of residency, required medical forms, online registration), you will receive the emailed letter with blank placement information. We will contact you if you are missing anything prior to the 15th and as soon as registration is complete we will email your child’s class placement.

There are a few changes in staffing for this year. Please welcome these staff members to their new positions. Many teachers did move classrooms. Our kindergarteners and 5th graders will be in the new addition. This year we will have three sections of kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade and two sections of 2nd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade.

    New Positions:

Mrs. Regina Fortman - 4th Grade

Mrs. Sue Meehan - 3rd Grade

Mrs. Laura Johnson (former Ms. Kennedy) - 3rd Grade

Ms. Meaghan Bertog - 5th Grade

Mrs. Lisa Smorczewski  - 1st Grade (Mrs. Dawson’s Leave)

There is one change to our drop-off and pick-up procedures. After dropping off or picking up your child from the staff parking lot on Roanoke, you will only be allowed to turn right out of the parking lot.  Please go to our webpage for detailed procedures.

Please remember that students that arrive at school or need to leave school outside of the normal times will need to be signed in or out by an adult. This includes any students arriving even a few minutes late in the morning. 1st-5th grade parents taking a child home for lunch will need to come into the office to sign out your child and sign them back in when you return.

It was a very busy summer at Greenbrier. The addition looks fabulous! It is amazing to see the progress that is made everyday. We are on schedule to have the building ready for our August 20th Ribbon Cutting ceremony and our Supply Drop Off.

    Construction Update

The cabinetry has arrived and they have begun the installation process. They look like a bunch of big puzzle pieces waiting to find their place in the new addition. On June 11th, they will start fencing off the entire building and parking lot. It will be a busy summer as they connect the second floor of the addition to the existing building, replace the plumbing in most classrooms, replace the tile in all of the downstairs hallways, and replace the blacktop on both playgrounds.

    Box Tops

Congratulations to our box top winners!

1st place with 749 is Mrs. Brady
2nd place with 732 is Miss Kennedy

4th place with 556 is Mrs. Donovan

The total number of box tops collected this year for the entire school is 5,888!

    Construction 5/25

    May 25, 2018

    Construction Update

Today, I got the chance to take the staff on a tour of the addition. They were all very excited to see the space from the inside for the first time. I can't wait to show it to everyone in August. They have finished tiling and carpeting the hallways and classrooms. They have even added the whiteboards and bulletin boards. Cabinetry arrives next week as well as the flooring for the stairs. Teachers are starting to pack up some of the things that they will not need for the rest of the school year. They will be replacing many of the sinks in the classroom, so teachers are starting to prepare.

    Last Chance for A Yearbook

If you missed the chance to order a yearbook, we still have a limited number available. Please send in the attached form no later than June 1. The yearbooks will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis, until we run out.
