Thank you for all you do to support our students and teachers. I am frequently reminded by kind words and guestures how wonderful it is to be a part of the caring community. I hope that next week is a time for you to enjoy family and friends! I am encouraging our staff to do the same. It has been a busy fall. I have asked them to unplug and recharge. They will be putting away messages on their email accounts, and respond to any issues or concerns when they return on Monday, December 2. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    Halloween FAQ

Below are answers to frequently asked questions about Greenbrier’s annual Halloween celebration.

When should my child wear his/her costume to school? (Wearing a costume is optional.)

Morning Kindergarten and Early Childhood students should wear their costumes to school. All other students wear their costumes after lunch. For first through fifth grade, please do not apply makeup to your child’s face before sending them to school in the morning.

When is the morning Early Childhood and Kindergarten parade?

Morning Early Childhood and Kindergarten parades begin at 9:30 a.m. They will start their parade by exiting door 8, walk to the blacktop and then parade across the blacktop to the front doors of the school.

Can my child go home for lunch to change into a costume?

Yes. We sent home a permission slip that should be returned to school by October 24th so we know which children will be leaving school that day.

12:10 pm lunch dismissal will be the same as after school, car line in the back and walkers will leave out the front. Please make sure your child knows what to do.

1:10 pm All students should return to school and use FRONT DOOR ONLY.

    When is the lunch period?

The lunch/recess period is from 12:10 p.m. – 1:10 p.m.  Zip lunch only, no hot lunch, will be the only lunch offered on Halloween: Cereal/Yogurt, Pizza Kit.

If my child stays at school for lunch can they change into a costume at school?

Yes. Following lunch and a recess break, the students will change into their costumes. Please label any bags that hold costumes to avoid confusion.

    What is the parade route?

Morning Parade Route: At 9:30 a.m., the students will exit door 8, walk to the blacktop and parade to the front doors of the school. Parents are welcome to line up on the blacktop to watch the parade. Following the parade, students will return to their classrooms for Halloween activities.

Afternoon Parade Route - At 1:30 p.m., the parade, led by Mrs. Bingaman and the front office, will leave the blacktop on the north side of Greenbrier and continue in front of the school, along Verde to Roanoke. We will proceed on Roanoke towards the Greenbrier School playground, over the blacktop and back to the front doors of the school. Following the parade, the students will return to their classrooms for special fun activities planned by teachers and PTA room representatives.

What if it rains on that day?

If it rains we will parade indoors. We will invite parents into the Commons and Gym to view the indoor parade.

Again, please note, that these food items are NOT ingested.

GREENBRIER SCHOOL'S HALLOWEEN PARADE AND PARTY

    Early Childhood – K-5
    Thursday, October 31, 2019

    Dear Parent(s),

Following the tradition of past years, we are planning our Halloween activities for the morning and afternoon of October 31st. Although most children take part in the costume parade and party, their participation is voluntary, not mandatory.

We would like Halloween to be fun for all and require costumes that portray non-violent characters. Please remember that we are an early childhood through fifth grade elementary school. Costumes that may be appropriate for older children or adults may frighten younger children. We are requesting your cooperation in selecting school appropriate costumes that avoid violence, sharp objects, weapons, “squirting or dripping” blood, gore, etc. Please consider selecting a costume that reflects an upbeat, positive theme. We want to model positive examples of caring, respect, and responsibility. In the interest of safety, please be sure your child is able to walk and sit comfortably in his/her costume and is able to see where he/she is walking (masks sometimes obstruct a child's view).

Food will not be served during classroom celebrations. Please do not send any food items to school for distribution to students. Our Halloween parades and classroom parties will focus on the fun of celebrating together through holiday games, crafts, and activities.

    A.M. Early Childhood Classes

At 9:30 A.M. students will exit door 8, walk to the blacktop and parade to the front doors of the school. Parents are welcome to line up on the blacktop to watch the parade. Following the parade, students will return to their classrooms for Halloween activities.

    P.M. Early Childhood Classes

At 1:10 P.M. students will exit door 8, walk to the blacktop and parade to the front doors of the school. Parents are welcome to line up on the blacktop to watch the parade. Following the parade, students will return to their classrooms for Halloween activities.

    A.M. Kindergarten

At 9:30 A.M. students will exit door 8, walk to the blacktop and parade to the front doors of the school. Parents are welcome to line up on the blacktop to watch the parade. Following the parade, students will return to their classrooms for Halloween activities.

Parents who wish to watch the EC or A.M. parade:

Parents are cordially invited to watch the parade. If you wish to park, please use the street parking while obeying village signage. DO NOT PARK in the teachers’ parking lot in the back.

    P.M. Kindergarten through Fifth Grade

P.M. Kindergarten students will report to school at 12:45 p.m and proceed to their classroom for attendance. At 1:10 P.M., first through fifth students will go directly to their classrooms for attendance. The parade will begin at approximately 1:30 P.M. from the blacktop of Greenbrier School. We will walk across the blacktop to the sidewalk on Verde, walk to Roanoke, continue on Roanoke, and walk back to the playground area and return to the classrooms through the front doors. (The students will remain on the sidewalk, not crossing any streets as we parade around the building). In case of rain, we will parade in the Gym and Commons.

Parents who wish to watch the parade:

Parents are cordially invited to watch the parade. On this day, we ask you to follow these specific directions for 1:10 drop off and for parade parking. When returning your students to school after lunch, please use the drop off in the front of the school. If you wish to park, please use the street parking while obeying village signage. DO NOT PARK in the teachers’ parking lot in the back.

Children staying for lunch will be allowed to change into their costumes following their lunch. Please send a costume that is easily put on by the child. Also, please label any bags that hold costumes to avoid confusion.

We need to account for the whereabouts of all our students at all times on this day. Therefore, please return the Halloween Attendance sheet that will be sent home for each child. We would appreciate your cooperation in returning this form to your student’s teacher by 9:05 a.m. on Thursday, October 24th.

When should my child wear his/her costume to school? (Wearing a costume is optional)
Morning Kindergarten and Early Childhood students should wear their costumes to school. All other students wear their costumes after lunch. For first through fifth grade, please do not apply any makeup to your child’s face before sending them to school in the morning.

    When is the lunch period?
The lunch period is our regular lunch from 12:10 p.m. – 1:10 p.m. Zip line lunch will be the only lunch option this day. There will be no hot lunch option offered. Students may choose between:

    Cereal/Yogurt Lunch
    Pizza Kit Lunch

The students in grades 1-5 should return to school at 1:10 p.m. Students arriving back from lunch at 1:10 p.m. are to use the front doors of the school ONLY.

We make every attempt to maintain an appropriate learning environment during morning instruction. Your cooperation will assist us in making October 31st a day for both learning and celebrating. We’ll see you at the parades!

    Drills

Each year we practice many different drills at Greenbrier. Students practice first with their teacher, and then we practice as a school. During an Evacuation Drill, we practice leaving the building and lining up outside. During a Shelter in Place Drill, we go to safe areas of the building, kneel on the floor, bend over and cover our heads. We would use Shelter in Place in the event of severe weather. Bus Evacuation drills have students learning about bus safety and practicing evacuating the bus. The final drill is a Hard Lockdown. This would be when a serious or volatile situation exists. We have already practice some of these drills and we will continue practice them over the next couple of week.

    Conferences

We will be using Sign-Up Genius to sign up for conferences again this year. You will receive an email on October 2nd with a link to sign up for a Parent/Teacher Conference.

    Missed Calls from School

If you miss a phone call from school, please wait a few minutes for your voicemail notification and listen to it before calling back. Staff will always leave a message. We want to be able to direct you to the correct person when you call back.

    Heating and Air Conditioning

Sometime during the next couple of weeks, we will be turning off the air conditioning and turning on the heat. Until the heat is turned on, it may be chilly in the classrooms. After the heat has been turned on, it may get warm in the classrooms. Please consider sending your children with layers of clothing so they can adapt to the temperatures.

    Halloween

    Appointments

If you schedule your child for an appointment during the school day, please notify the office the day before the appointment whenever possible. Otherwise, we are interrupting class to let the teacher know.
